Lydia & Erik | Race & Religious Wedding with Gabrielle Hail Photography, Leaf + Petal NOLA, Lovegood Wedding & Event Rentals in New Orleans

March 30, 2019

Hello, hello! Bringing you a fun wedding today for Lydia and Erik. Lydia met us at the Warehouse of Lovegood to see our collection, and we just fell in love with her bubbly personality. She was such a doll, and we could not ask for better clients. Of course, she selected Race & Religious for her wedding day. It turned out so good!

When did y’all get married?

We had a long and relaxed engagement. We got married February 1st, 2019.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell!

So this is one of those things that I planned and thought about for so long and then the day of I was like, eeeh, whatever! I would say my shoes were new, and my aunt cross stitched a little E&L that I pinned on the inside of my dress as a something blue.

Describe your wedding flowers.

My wedding flowers were perfect, I didn’t want super classic neutral flowers so I went with pops of burgundy since those are my favorite hues, and lots of greenery. As everything else on the wedding, I had a very slight idea and I left it on Margaret’s hands and she killed it

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story.

Erik and I met at college, we had two classes together but never really spoke to each other until Erik approached me one day to ask about an assignment, which I wasn’t even sure about but I told him what I knew and walked away. Then Erik pulled my email from the class roster and emailed me, he signed the email quoting Carly Jae Repsen “Call me Maybe” and his number. I thought it was kinda weird but a little bit charming? I gave him my number and we started texting, he invited me to his Mardi Gras party which I didn’t want to attend because I thought he was a bit weird, but my dad was visiting and he literally made me go, he bought me some beer and delivered me to the party, the rest is history haha!

Tell us all about the proposal!

The proposal is really funny because i knew it was coming. Erik had asked my dad a year before for his blessing and my dad being who he is, couldn’t keep a secret so he told me the day after, to make sure I also had a year to think about the decision I was going to make. I never told Erik my dad had told me until after the proposal. Anyways, it was our 4th anniversary dinner and I’m the one that usually books dinner and hotel reservations, but this time he said he would take care of it, so I was like “aaah,ok”. On March 11th, 2017 we went to dinner to Coquette, and then he suggested going to exchange gifts to our usual late night hang out spot which is morning call at city park, I gave him my gift and then he handed me the notebook where keeps all his thoughts and letters to me, we read it out loud and at the end he kinda went down on one knee but came up rather fast to hug me. It was the best because I blacked out but I always have the notebook to go back to and read everything he said during the proposal.

What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together?

We are currently planning our late honeymoon to Japan and we are very excited! We also have so many things going on including two weddings to attend and my dads 60th birthday party in Mexico so I’m sure it’ll be a fun year!

Favorite detail of the wedding was:

Erik says the papel picado hanging over the bridge (thank YOU for that awesome idea!)

I really loved the tables with the greenery and the flowers, not using linens and going for that relaxed look turned out perfect. Also my carrot cake with horchata mouse was PERFECT.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?

My advice is to trust your vendors, give them a clear idea of what you want and really trust them, that’s what I did and it turned out perfect. Don’t get caught up in the little details and enjoy the planning and the day!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them.

Our first dance was to “Don’t go Home without me” by lights, it has beautiful lyrics and it’s one of Eriks favorite.

The groom and bridal party walked in to heroes by David Bowie which was AWESOME!

I walked in to an instrumental version of “Can’t help falling in love”

And we walked out to “You Make my Dreams”

Throughout the reception we played a good mix of Mexican and American songs, recent and old, it was absolutely perfect, it really showed our personalities and it was fun!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?

Definitely seeing the space set up and seeing Eriks face when he saw everything come together. I asked so many tiny questions and he said they were totally worth it at the end haha. We came back from the second line band, and seeing the awesome tables, the flowers, the cigar bar, it was crazy and so special to see all the work from all my vendors coming together.

We also did a conga line that always happens in Mexico where guests run around the venue and Erik and I stand on a chair and pour tequila on everyone’s mouth haha, it was great and different for everyone that has never attended a Mexican wedding

Lydia & Erik wanted to have a fun New Orleans staple for the late night snack for all their guest, I mean who doesn't think of Lucky Dogs?!
